Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria Forecasts Rise in Insider Threats Driven by AI Misuse in 2024

In a recent forecast by the Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN), a surge in insider threats fueled by the malicious use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been predicted for the year 2024. The association, representing cybersecurity professionals across Nigeria, highlighted the importance of collaboration with law enforcement to address and legally pursue these fraudulent activities.

According to the report sighted by punch correspondent, the CSEAN National Cyber Threat Forecasts 2024 warns of various cyber threats looming over the horizon. These include mis/disinformation campaigns, ransomware attacks, crypto scams, and the concerning rise of AI-enabled threats leading to insider breaches. The forecast also emphasises the necessity of bolstering cybersecurity measures amidst economic hardships, as cybercrime becomes an increasingly attractive avenue for illegal earnings.

To combat these growing threats, businesses and organisations are urged to take proactive steps, such as aligning employee pay with the cost of living, offering financial incentives for loyalty, and providing comprehensive ethics training with a focus on cybersecurity responsibilities. Additionally, implementing robust cybersecurity protocols like multifactor authentication is deemed essential in safeguarding against potential breaches.

In light of past events, particularly the cyber hacktivism witnessed following the coup d’état in Niger in 2023, the report underscores the likelihood of similar activities escalating in 2024. To mitigate the threat posed by cyber hacktivism, Nigeria is urged to adopt a multi-faceted approach. Strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure through investments in advanced security technologies and the enhancement of cybersecurity personnel capabilities is deemed paramount.

Commenting on the report, Ade Soyinka, President of the Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria, stressed the critical need for collaboration between public and private sectors. He emphasised the importance of adopting updated computing resources and committing to cybersecurity best practices to effectively combat cyber threats in the digital landscape of 2024.

Stay informed and vigilant as we navigate the evolving cybersecurity landscape together. Remember, cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility.
